Is there any real value for an installer – either as an individual or as a company – in being a member of a trade association? Does belonging to this type of organisation increase the chances of improving levels of business and are trade associations doing enough to promote themselves and their members to end users?
Graham Granville, Director at Zircom:
There would be real value in an installer’s trade association if an appropriate one existed! Many associations that exist today provide little more than a logo to put on letter-headed paper and ensure profits for that body. Thus there is no real value in being a member. The majority of installers are ISO approved but this only ensures process and procedures are adhered to. Though a valued and essential qualification it does not get down to real installation issues.
There is a real need for an installer’s organisation dealing with standards and issues. Though membership of such an organisation would not increase business, it would provide a forum to discuss standards and requirements from an installation angle. It would set standards that are sensible and balanced from an installation perspective, and collectively defend against potential bullying tactics of suppliers and manufacturers regarding targets and the granting of “approved installer status”. The key issue with the last point is that while suppliers flex their muscles with the cabling SME’s, the same suppliers give the big boys better pricing and treatment.
If such an organisation exists please accept my apology and send me an application form. If not then Zircom would welcome the formation of such a body.
